"It's not what you make it's what you save..."
How my frugal Italian American dad taught me to love saving
“ ‘It’s not what you make, it’s what you save that matters.’ Galdo Pavini
This is a Galdoism. Galdo Pavini - or as I called him, Dad - had quotes and sayings he lived by. Some he made up; others were words he felt instilled wisdom. And if you were fortunate enough to know him, you heard them quite often. Dad was frugal during an era when being frugal meant you were smart. You weren’t cheap, you were savvy. It was a natural side effect of being raised in the Great Depression and living through WWII. As part of the Greatest Generation, my father built a prosperous and fulfilling life while living within his means.” p.3, The Joy of $aving
The idea of living within our means doesn’t get much airplay these days, and many of us are convinced it’s an impossible goal. I’m here to tell you it IS not only possible but that you can start right now. Set aside an hour this week to tally up all your income in one column, and all your obligations in another column. This is the first step to getting clarity, which will help light the path ahead. How does this feel? Do you like what you see? Do you actually have more money than you thought or more debt? Allow yourself to feel the feelings-and try not to beat yourself up if things look worse than you expected. This is the first step towards creating the financial life you want. We’ll be posting next steps here next time. I’d love to hear how this exercise went for you! You can reach out at JoyofSaving1@gmail.com
